Journey of a Dance Teacher

Teacher

Gaye Hemsley dance teacher for over sixty years is writing her memoir

'Journey of a Dance Teacher'

PREFACE

The journey started when I was about ten years old.

My mother, a ballroom dance teacher, took me to see the ballet ‘Giselle’. It was presented by the English company ‘Ballet Rambert’ From start to finish I was utterly inspired.

‘When can I start ballet classes?’ was my constant question for the rest of the week.

Mother booked me into beginner’s ballet class to start the following Saturday. I was by far the oldest child in the class, but I didn’t mind. Being older I learnt quickly, and soon shot up through the grading system. I realized I had started a bit late to become a ballerina, so decided to become a teacher.

My Mother opened up two rooms in our house and started her own dance studio in Epsom. As a young teenager I commenced teaching some of her adult pupils’ children.

Through those years of teaching and bringing up a family of four my love of dance and teaching never waned. When the children were off my hands I commenced combining travel with attending workshops and seminars in NZ and overseas.

Being a dance teacher doesn’t mean getting your qualifications, opening a syllabus book and start teachings. As with any profession or craft one has to endeavor to advance and improve one’s knowledge .I have attended workshops and seminars in New Zealand, Australia and England. I’ve taught at my step son’s English academy in Japan. An international conference in Finland was an enriching experience for my students and helpers. Prior to the conference we took a train to St Petersburg where we enjoyed forty eight hours. MAY THE DANCE NEVER END
